an old favourite...

have been in a bit of a crafting slump this last week, the spare room bed is littered with half cut aprons, half finished sock monkeys and a towering pile of ironing...
i did however find time to dig up a box of old gems,
i loved this book when i was a little girl...

this series was first published in 1928, "told and drawn" by Joyce Lankester Brisley...
i loved the drawings, the maps of the village, mmm's stripey pinafore and reading all about her adventures with billy blunt and little friend susan, stories from a lifetime ago...

looking back the thing that appeals most about it now is the red colouring on the black and white drawings...

my auntie darling has been collecting these for me from flea markets over the years so i have a lovely collection of different editions, and it seems they are also still available here...

so i'm off blackberrying this afternoon!

oh and there were fairies in the bottom of our garden too...

I love Milly Molly Mandy too! The drawing of the village was my favourite. I prefer reading from the old editions too - seems more magical. Your copies look great.p.s thanks for the comments today!

I love MMM, too...didn't have any of the books when I was a kid, so not sure where I read them...must have been at school. Lovely pics. Thanks.

Maybe that's where I got my love of maps from! I used to have a wonderful time tracing my fingers along all the paths that MMM & co traipsed through. Wonderful books!

Wow! I'd completely forgotten about MMM, but I read the books when I was little - I remember her stripey dresses. They were great stories, looking at your copies brings back lots of memories.

I loved Milly-Molly-Mandy as well - but it was the map of the village I liked most. I re-read the books to my daughters and this time I enjoyed the story in which MMM makes a crazy patchwork tea-cosy for her mother from various scraps she accumulates in different ways - absolutely delightful.

The original MMM died last year. She was the grandma of a friend of mine. The family have all the books with dedications to 'Millicent' from the author
